Obi-Wan Kenobi writer addresses Darth Vader clash in series before A New Hope

Obi-Wan Kenobi spoilers follow.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has been showing us what our titular Jedi hero has been getting up to in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and some plot points have got Star Wars fans spinning more than Anakin Skywalker in a Naboo Starfighter.

In the Disney+ show, Obi-Wan has both met up with Leia (apart from the time she was literally just born) and had a showdown with Darth Vader. Fans are unsure whether it contradicts A New Hope, seeing as Leia's message seemed quite impersonal and Vader said, "When I left you I was but the learner".

While people have been debating if the series steps on the toes of that first film, head writer and executive producer Joby Harold has no such doubts.

"There was no line in A New Hope that said we couldn’t," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "One could argue that Obi-Wan’s 'from a certain point of view' thing is obviously revisionist storytelling in regard to the original trilogy, or it’s another way of saying there are gray areas and things we don’t know.

"There’s nothing wrong with uncovering the past and its truths in storytelling, so it never felt wrong to me. There’s nothing that I feel like we’ve violated at all. If anything, we’ve informed those scenes so that some of the choices that we’ve taken for granted in the [original trilogy] actually make more sense now."

He added: "If you came to the entire Star Wars storytelling world fresh and watched it all the way through from Episode I, this would feel like a natural link between those two trilogies."

While serving as a bridge between films, the series has also linked to the game Jedi: Fallen Order and, in the latest episode, had a heartbreaking shout-out to The Clone Wars TV series.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is now streaming new episodes weekly on Disney+, airing on Wednesdays. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
