The Resident season 5 spoilers follow.
The Resident is set to welcome back a fan-favourite character through a series of flashbacks in the upcoming season 5 finale, and a first look at Nic Nevin's return has now been revealed.
Emily VanCamp had played the role of nurse practitioner Nic Nevin since the show's first season, but she exited the series earlier in season 5 when Nic passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident.

The Marvel actress will reappear as Nic in the season 5 finale on May 17, as Conrad (Matt Czuchry) realises he needs to work through his previous relationship with Nic to try and move forward in his love life following her death.

The episode will see Conrad revisit a night with Nic in the time after Gigi was born, while Nic will also appear in four to five other flashback scenes as Conrad works through his grief and try to focus on the future. The heart-warming first look images show a series of tender moments and conversations between Conrad and Nic.
Executive producer Peter Elkoff revealed to TVLine: "He hasn't been able to make a move and find that next love. He knows that he's still stuck in the past, in a way, with Nic.
"He keeps going back to pieces of that night [with Nic], because he thinks the answer of how he moves on is in that night… and he gets an answer, a realisation that frees him in a certain way."

Recent episodes of the hit Fox drama have seen Conrad make steps towards moving on romantically after Nic's death in his growing relationship with ER doctor Cade Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne), and he has also helped to support Cade through her recovery after she was shot.
Meanwhile, neurosurgeon and Nic's friend Billie (Jessica Lucas) also appears to have developed feelings for Conrad and questioned whether he was in love with Cade, but Conrad struggled with his own emotions and instead explained to Billie that he hasn't allowed himself to love anyone else since Nic's death.
Will the season 5 finale give Conrad the closure he needs to move on and find love again?
The Resident season 5 airs on Tuesday at 8/7c on FOX in the US. In the UK, season 5 is airing on Fridays at 9pm on Sky Witness, and you can catch up on seasons 1-3 via Disney+.
