Telling Marco that she cheated on him and discovering the CIA's fraudulent evaluation of her nearly led Cassie to break her one year of sobriety. She resisted, that is, until her brother Davey sent her a stream of text messages about their forthcoming trip home, and the letter that she had promised to write to their late father.

With this as the final straw, Cassie took a swig from the last martini in the shaker, before viewers saw her at the store buying vodka as well as drinking a bottle on the curb outside.
Of course, fans were devastated for Cassie, but a final twist came when 'Gold Dress Cassie' revealed that she had not been sober for a year, rather she had actually broken her sobriety twice after the six-month mark – a memory that she had somehow repressed.
Cuoco addressed the emotional episode when talking to TVLine and observed: "I think that we all, in our lives, have kept things to ourselves or not been honest with ourselves, and that's what broke my heart about Cassie this season — she can’t even look at herself.
"She can’t be honest, because she’s so worried about how people look at her, and she can’t even admit that she made these mistakes."

The Big Bang Theory actress went on to explain that episode five has revealed the true nature of the show's second season.
"If she succeeded, we wouldn’t have a show. She’s got to make those mistakes. And everyone’s journey in sobriety is their own, no two are the same," she explained.
"That’s what this season is about – self acceptance and self forgiveness," both of which she hopes Cassie can pursue with some success.
"I think we could all be a bit kinder to ourselves," she added.
