ABC has renewed its veteran drama The Rookie for a fifth season as part of its 2022-2023 slate.
The crime series, which ranks among the network's most-watched shows this season, stars Nathan Fillion in the lead role as LAPD's John Nolan.
It also stars Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan and Shawn Ashmore.
Celebrating the series renewal on March 31, Fillion posted the message 'Congratulations on season 5!' on Instagram, alongside the caption: "I couldn't be more proud of what we have accomplished with this show. Congratulations to our cast, crew, writers, producers, casting directors, directors, and everyone who has lent their talents to #therookieabc over the years.

The actor continued, "This job brings me real joy, I look forward to many more episodes with you all. I'd also like to thank the fans who keep coming back. In February this year, it was reported The Rookie could see a new spin-off series — centred on a new character played by Niecy Nash.
The actress is appearing first in the main show as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the academy, with her stint lasting two episodes.
The guest appearance seees Clark welcomed on board by Fillion's Nolan and the LA branch of the FBI to help on a case, after one of her former pupils is suspected of terrorism after a power plant explosion.

Speaking about the spin-off that is likely to air next year if picked up, Nash said in a statement: "I'm so excited to guest star on The Rookie and bring Simone Clark to life!"
She added, "She is a spirited and spicy fish out of water. The cast is amazing and I can't wait to play!"
So that's a fifth season AND a potential series spin-off to look forward to!
The Rookie airs on ABC in the US, and airs on Sky Witness in the UK. It can also be streamed on NOW.
