Game of Thrones wrapped up in 2019, and almost three years later, the first of many discussed spin-offs is finally making its way to the screen.

Via its official Twitter account, Sky announced that House of the Dragon is premiering on August 22 alongside a pretty epic poster.

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the main series, the Targaryen family and the events leading to the 'Dance of the Dragons' civil war.

The original series was already set in ye olde fantasy times anyway, so we're not sure yet how Westeros is going to differ this time around, but leading star Matt Smith has teased that the spin-off will have its own identity.

"I think it's really different to the original series, to be honest with you," he recently said. "I mean it has to be. The original series was its own thing and it was, it was so brilliant and, and sort of left a mark in a way that it would be impossible to repeat," he told ComicBook.com.

"So, I don't know. The truth is I haven't seen any so it's difficult for me. Essentially it's in the same world, it has to take on a slightly different identity. But who knows? I have no idea."

His words echo that of director Miguel Sapochnik, who stated that the spin-off "has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show".

Other spin-offs, such as Tales of Dunk and Egg, have had some progress made, while one starring Naomi Watts was axed after filming a pilot.

HBO boss Casey Bloys has stated that there is "no guarantee" any more Thrones projects will make it to screens. "[We're] not trying to fill a schedule with a new prequel every year or anything like that," he said to TVLine. "It's just based on what stories we're excited about telling."

House of the Dragon will premiere August 22 on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK, and a day earlier on HBO in the US. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
