Bridgerton season 2 spoilers follow.

Colin Bridgerton actor Luke Newton has teased that romance may be on the way for his character and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) in Bridgerton.

Following the arrival of season 2 last week, much discussion has focused on the pair's potential courtship as they grow ever closer. However, Colin breaks everyone's heart at the end when Penelope overhears him declare that he would never court her.

Speaking about where things could go next following that setback, Newton admitted to Digital Spy and other media that it was "really interesting" to "sort of juggle Colin's intentions this season".

He elaborated: "There are moments when he's quite sensitive and he's being kind and generous and is very aware of how he can help people.

"And then there are moments when he's completely unaware and insensitive, particularly to characters like Penelope. He can't see what's right in front of his face. So yeah, it was kind of really interesting to play the two sides of that coin, and to jump between the two.

"I'm really excited to see what happens in the future," Newton continued. "Obviously, we've gotten to this boiling point now where we have no idea how Penelope is going to react to what happens at the end of the season and where that takes their relationship, because they've kind of taken a step up this year, their relationship has definitely developed, maybe not to the extent that Penelope would like it to or that viewers would like it to."

Benedict actor Luke Thompson interjected by noting that "Penelope hasn't been that straight as well. Like she's got this huge secret that she's not sharing with you"

Newton noted: "Yeah so fans need to remember that actually."

Speaking further about Colin's true feelings and a potential romance, the star explained: "I think it's actually so much fun to play that I kind of don't know the answer to that actually... and also he doesn't know that.

"When I think of Colin, particularly at this point in the story, he's clouded by ambition and guilt. He feels like he's been judged, he feels lost, very much lost. He's come back and he now wants to consider himself a man. He's completed his mission that he thought was his ambition.

"So I think there's a lot going on in his head and he thinks of himself as the same as his brothers, but he's actually eight to 10 years younger. So he's going through that sort of teenage stage of life. He's obviously been very sheltered.

"So I yeah, I'm really excited to see but I couldn't possibly say what, what I expect to happen because I don't want to say that and then it just be completely the opposite."
