Walker spin-off Independence has nabbed Katherine McNamara for the lead part.

Known to Arrowverse audiences as Mia Smoak – she's also appeared in Shadowhunters and The Stand recently – the American actress has signed on to this 1800s-set prequel series as Abby Walker, "an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes" (via Deadline).

But don't get too carried away by this news, because it's only at the pilot stage right now.

Reacting to her casting on social media yesterday (March 16), McNamara tweeted: "A girl walks into a western – there's a new Walker in town. Thrilled to saddle up w @larryteng & the amazing team for an epic journey.

"Honored to be handed the reigns of the #WALKER legacy w #MattBarr . Pass the whisky y'all & let's ride this trail together! #WalkerIndependence."

Her followers were excited by the news, as one wrote back: "I was a huge Arrow fan and you were so amazing in it. And I am so happy and excited that you are gonna be a fellow #WalkerFamily member. Can't wait for the show."

"Congrats on joining the #WalkerFamily. Looking forward to seeing you kill it in this role," added someone else.

As for the nuts and bolts of McNamara's character, Abby is described as a "tough-minded woman moving across the country with her husband to a new life in Independence".

When a horse thief kills her husband under the cloak of darkness, a grief-stricken Abby wanders into the town of Independence, taking on the name 'Walker' and sets about building her strength back up.

Walker: Independence will air on The CW if the pilot gets picked up.
