Killing Eve season 4 spoilers follow.

Killing Eve returned on UK screens with the first episode of season 4 tonight (March 5), and viewers didn't take too well to a certain scene.

The beginning of the end to the hit drama opened to shock from audiences when they watched a cat get killed at the hands of psychopath Villanelle (Jodie Comer).

During a scene in her bathroom, she knelt before the bathtub to begin her prayers. "Dear God, let me have a new life... please," she said as the candles flickered in the back to choral audio.

Poorly yet conveniently timed, her cat entered from behind and she proceeded to pick it up after its purring caught her attention.

"Come here, let's sit," she said to the cat as she sat on the edge of the tub.

"There's nothing to be scared about, we're all friends here," she continued. The cat suddenly screeched, before Villanelle released it into the tub and was seen with blood in the bath.

Viewers took to Twitter to express shock at the scene and their concern for the feline.

"#KillingEve just went too bloody far!!! Shame on you @BBCOne #Cat" one user wrote.

Another viewer warned: "Don't you dare kill the cat villanelle #killingEve," while a third said: "Killing the cat was a step too far. I'm on team Eve now."

A fourth said: "Three series of building her up as the acceptable face of psychopathy, ruined in one moment of kittycide. #KillingEve".

A fifth user highlighted the irony of the moment: "Let me have a new life please [...] As the [cat] drowns in the bath."
