The first episode of Jeremy Renner's new TV series Mayor of Kingstown aired yesterday (November 15) in the US, and there has already been a shocking twist.
The Hawkeye star's crime thriller follows the powerful McLusky family in Michigan, who all work for the town's incarceration system, where Mitch (Kyle Chandler) and Mike McLusky (Marvel's Renner) work as unofficial community liaisons.
Chandler, known for roles in Friday Night Lights and The Wolf of Wall Street among other blockbusters, plays the titular mayor of the working class town.

While Mitch and Mike go about their unpaid, and often criminal roles, McLusky mother Mariam, played by Dianne Wiest (Law & Order, Edward Scissorhands), works as a teacher in the prison. She disagrees with the McLusky men's work, but puts her faith in her youngest son, Kyle (The O.C.'s Taylor Handley).

But in a twist that shocked viewers last night, Mitch McLusky's reign over Kingstown was dramatically cut short.
The end of the two-part premiere episode, titled 'The End Begins', saw Kyle Chandler's character fatally shot by someone who discovers the McLuskys are hiding a large fortune.
It seems likely that his eldest son Mike will step up to run the area in his father's absence. Despite swearing he will leave the Michigan town and its family-run incarceration system, an unexpected guest comes seeking help from the mayor, and it seems he might not rush off after all.

The ten-episode series continues on Paramount+, also starring Game of Thrones villain Aidan Gillen, up-and-coming British star Emma Laird and Durham County's Hugh Dillon. Dillon also co-created and executive produces the series.
Taylor Sheridan, who starred in Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars, is the show's other co-creator. He has previously written several films, including the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water, Sicario and another Paramount TV series, Yellowstone.
Mayor of Kingstown streams on Paramount+ in the US. UK transmission details are yet to be announced.
