X-Men: The Animated Series gave '90s kids a lot: one of the best opening themes of all time, the introduction of serialised storytelling into American TV in general, Storm's incredibly hammy speeches, adaptations of some of comics' most iconic issues, and Jean Grey fainting all the time.

The classic series being released in full on Disney+ and the release of a behind-the-scenes book has reignited interest, while talk of a continuation has bubbled away for the last few years... and now it's been confirmed!

What to Read Next

One of the many announcements from Disney+ Day (November 12) was X-Men '97, a direct continuation of the series. Even better, members of the creative team and the original cast are reprising their roles.

The returning cast members are: Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Catherine Disher (Jean), Leonore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Chris Potter (Gambit), Christopher Britton (Mr Sinister, the best villain), and Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler).

Jubilee's former actress Alyson Court is returning, but she has confirmed that she will be playing a different character instead, with the likelihood being that an Asian actress will take over.

The revived series is set to premiere on the streaming service in 2023, giving Disney plenty of time to give the original series a decent HD upscale or remaster, as well as being in the correct episode order.

X-Men '97 will be produced by Marvel Studios, but will be separate from the rest of the MCU... although with all their multiverse shenanigans lately, you never know.

X-Men: The Animated Series is available to stream now on Disney+.
