Lucifer season 6 reveals new look at special animated episode

Lucifer's sixth and final season is just days away from premiering, but as excited as we are for the season six opener, our interest is piqued by the show's upcoming animated special.

As if Lucifer's musical episode wasn't deviation enough, the Netflix series has introduced animation to its last ever run, with season six's third episode 'Yabba Dabba Do Me'.

Lucifer's executive producer Joe Henderson enlisted Harley Quinn's Jennifer Coyle and the show's team of animators to transform Tom Ellis and Lauren German into cartoons for the episode, and although we don't know how they fell into the second dimension, we do know what it will look like when they do.

Speaking to Collider ahead of Lucifer's return next week, Henderson admitted that an animated episode was something he'd "always wanted to do", and we can certainly see why.

"I just didn't think I'd actually get to, because it's just such an undertaking, but it was COVID and we were looking for ways to have fewer days on set," he explained, revealing an unexpected silver lining to filming restrictions.

"And so the problem became the opportunity, because I secretly had been wanting to do it for years."

Elsewhere, Lucifer himself Tom Ellis recently shared his hopes for fans once the final episodes air. "I hope that they'll be crying, I really hope they'll be sobbing," he joked. "And then I hope that their hearts will be filled with joy at the same time."

Lauren German, who plays Chloe Decker, agreed, adding that the series finale will be "bittersweet". "I think fans will get what they want," she said, "and I think it doesn't cheat."

Lucifer seasons 4 and 5 are available to watch now on Netflix, and season 6 will premiere on September 10. Catch up on seasons 1-3 via Amazon Prime Video.
