Black Summer season 2 spoilers follow.
Black Summer was a ferocious hit for Netflix when it first dropped in 2019, but for a while there, news on season two was scarce. Eventually, that all changed when the (unofficial) Z Nation prequel was suddenly resurrected midway through June 2021.
Now season two is infecting all our tellies, it's time we look ahead to see what's coming next in this relentlessly horrifying apocalypse. So grab a shotgun, board up your houses, and join us here at Digital Spy as we take a look at what's happening with Black Summer season three. (Just make sure you don't trap yourself in a blind alley, whether that's between two houses or a series of airfield outbuildings, because that seems to be a recurrent problem for our heroes.)
Black Summer season 3 release date: When is it coming out?
Netflix has not yet officially renewed Black Summer for a third season, and that's frustrating to say the least given how season two ends – namely, with Sun flying into the sunset with a Korean-speaking pilot and Rose pinned down on the airfield in a Mexican stand-off.
However, the streamer did take its sweet time renewing Black Summer the first time around. If season three does end up happening, the earliest it will arrive is summer 2022. Two years passed between the last two seasons, but it's worth bearing in mind that the real-life pandemic definitely didn't help when it came to filming this fictional outbreak.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, star Jaime King, who plays Rose, said she thinks it will get the greenlight, so watch this space for updates.
What to Read Next
Black Summer season 3 cast: Who will be in it?
Characters come and go at an alarming rate in Black Summer, which is precisely why this show is so terrifying. However, the first two seasons did revolve primarily around four main characters:
- Jaime King as Rose. Speaking to Forbes about the first time she was presented with the character, King said: "When I read the script, I was in Europe at the time. As soon as I closed the script, I literally changed my flight and flew back to the States because I was like, 'I am Rose.'"
- Zoe Marlett as Anna, Rose's teenage daughter
- Justin Chu Cary as Julius James (aka Spears), a former criminal masquerading as a soldier
- Christine Lee as Ooh "Sun" Kyungsun, a Korean woman who speaks no English
Kelsey Flower played Lance in season one and returned in the very first episode of season two, but it doesn't seem likely that he'll be back anytime soon – unless it's to eat someone. Cary's character also ends up dying by the end of season two, so the only way he'll return is via flashbacks.
That leaves King, Lee, and Marlett. But even they may not return in a potential third season. Anything's possible in this show, and the end of season two left Rose and Anna in a very ambiguous situation.
It should be noted that the door is open to some new faces, too. They're always introducing new zombie-bait, only to quickly dispatch them the moment you've started to feel something for them.
Black Summer season 3 plot: What will the second season be about?
"I have a few ideas," King told Express.co.uk. "I'm excited to get the writer's room going again. This is the kind of series that could go on forever, but I think it would be really powerful to do it in just three seasons, if possible.
"What do you do when there are no more commodities left? Exploring that idea."
Speaking to Comicbook.com about where it could go next, she said: "Hypothetically speaking, I would centre it on different chapters, where we are exploring sort of three central figures in different places. But that's just, I don't know, sketches."
Sun was the only one who made it to the plane in Black Summer's season two finale. Thankfully, the Korean-speaking pilot seems quite nice too, but where are they heading? Will things be safe for them when they eventually land? Given Sun's popularity with fans, we would be surprised if her story isn't developed further in season three.
So, that leaves Rose and Anna. They didn't make it to the plane, and in fact, we don't even know if they're still alive. Anna went back to retrieve her mum who was left wounded on the ground, but then she ended up hijacking a car. Does she drive the car off without Rose?
The season two finale deliberately leaves things up in the air, which might encourage Netflix to renew the show if fan demand is strong enough. Or perhaps there's another plan altogether? Given that Black Summer isn't overly invested in its characters beyond Rose, Anna and Sun, it's entirely possible that season three might reboot things entirely with a whole new cast, American Horror Story-style.
Black Summer season 3 trailer: When can we see a Netflix promo?
Unless the zombie apocalypse happens for real, look out for Black Summer season three footage as soon as it's available right here. So possibly midway through 2022 at the very earliest.
The best things come to those who wait...
