Disney+ series Loki has confirmed that Tom Hiddleston's fan-favourite character is gender fluid in a promo clip.

New footage shared online over the weekend teases a conversation between the titular Marvel shapeshifter and Owen Wilson's Agent Mobius of the Time Variance Authority.

And at the beginning of the clip, one of the TVA's featured files on Loki states "FLUID" next to the sex category.

Although this is a progressive development for the MCU, the character's gender fluidity isn't a revelation for many fans, as it was confirmed in Marvel Comics back in 2014.

In Original Sin #5.5, Odin referred to Loki as "my son and my daughter, and my child who is both".

Still, it's a welcome and significant choice from the Disney-owned studio to have on-screen confirmation.

In other news, while it might be impossible now to imagine a world where Loki was played by anyone other than Hiddleston, the English actor previously revealed that he auditioned for a completely different role when Thor was being cast.

"At the time, they were looking for less well-established actors, so that the audience didn't have an association – they just wanted people to see these new characters, these new actors," he told chatshow host Jimmy Fallon back in 2019.

"The remit was, if you're over six foot and you've got blonde hair, you could come and have a pop at it. So I actually auditioned [for Thor]. I never auditioned for Loki. I only ever auditioned for Thor, which is nuts."

Loki premieres on Wednesday (June 9), streaming exclusively on Disney+.
