Cursed spoilers follow.
Will Cursed season 2 be conjured into existence? The show rewrote the legend and flipped the classic tale of King Arthur on its head, by basing its story on the book by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, Cursed, which pushes Arthur aside to focus primarily on Nimue instead.
The Lady of the Lake was a minor character in legends of old, but here she's pushed to the forefront, subverting expectations with a more progressive take on Ye Olde English folklore.
"These hero stories are usually told from the male perspective, from a boy or a man's point of view," star Katherine Langford told Popsugar.
"What was interesting was crafting that story and looking at it as a woman who's being portrayed as a heroine. What makes it modern and applicable to now is that you're getting to see the challenges that she specifically would face as a woman as opposed to simply inserting a woman into a hero story.
"We asked ourselves, 'What's her own personal journey?' 'What are the adversities that she faces?' 'What are the things that get her down?' and 'What are the things that she can use?'
What to Read Next
"One of the things that we have recently been shooting is her idea that as a woman, and as a girl, you grow up never believing, or never even thinking, that you could be in a position of power. You never think you could be a king. So, when Nimue first receives the sword, it doesn't cross her mind."
Langford describes the show as a "fantastical and historical piece," telling Digital Spy and other media that, "It's probably going to create its own little genre."
To achieve that, Netflix needed to renew Cursed for a second season. Did that happen? Let's pour through our mystic tomes and figure out what's next for Nimue.
Cursed season 2 release date: When will it air?
We have some bad news for you that even The Lady of the Lake couldn’t have forseen – there will be no return to Arthurian England as Cursed has been cancelled after just one season.
Star Devon Terrell (Arthur) had been hoping for a second season, as he told Digital Spy: "Episode 10 was where I kind of was like, 'Oh, wow, this world is potentially only just beginning. It was my favourite episode when I read it, too, because… season one always feels like: everyone has to get on board; you have to understand it – otherwise, there's no point being 'action, action, action', and then people are like, 'I don’t know what happened, but I liked it'.
"I think it really all came together at the end. The way they've done it, I was like, 'this is amazing'. Because now you've met the people, and it's like we're leaning into their legacies, or the mythology of those characters.
"If there is a season two, I think the finale is an amazing launching pad for that, because for me, personally, the show just gets better and better."
"I love where we end it. Fingers crossed. Hopefully everybody watches. But there's so much room to grow. It just feels like the beginning – we just scratched the surface of what the show could be, and how far it could go."
Oh, now we feel really sad.
According to Deadline back in July 2021, the cast have been released from their contracts to pursue other opportunities. Katherine Langford has made the coming-of-age movie Spontaneous, Devon Terrell is filming a 2022 series called Rap Sh*t and Gustaf Skarsgård, otherwise known as Merlin, has made the Swedish movie The Emigrants, and is about to start work on the TV series What Remains with dad Stellan Skarsgård and Andrea Riseborough.
Cursed season 2 cast: Who's in it?
Unfortunately we'll never know which members of the cast would have returned now the series has been cancelled.
It's incredibly frustrating for fans as Nimue's fate was left up in the air following that grisly cliffhanger at the end of season one.
She was last seen shot by arrows, falling into the water below, as Merlin regained his magic with the help of Excalibur and made his escape with Morgana.
"I just hope that we would see a second season," Skarsgåard told RadioTimes.com before Cursed was cancelled. "Mostly just because I'm so curious to see what happens to Merlin and the other characters. Episode 10 leaves us with a massive cliffhanger, and I just want to know what happens next."
As do we all, Gustav.
Cursed season 2 plot: What will the second season be about?
There were some mighty cliffhangers at the end of season one, but sadly they'll never be resolved following Netflix's cancellation of the series.
Did Nimue survive?
Now the Weeping Monk has been revealed as Lancelot, and Squirrel as Percival, what would have happened next – would they have joined Arthur's crusade in a second season?
And what would happen between Arthur and Morgana?
Terrell told Harper's Bazaar about how he thought Arthur would be feeling after Morgana's transformation into the Widow.
"The wonderful thing about how Shalom [Brune-Franklin] plays [Morgana] is she's such a strong character as well. There are so many great female protagonists in this story that I think it sets up Morgana to be… I don't know if she's going to be the biggest enemy that we face in the show, or if she's an ally. That's what's wonderful.
"Our last encounter was me trying to plead with my sister to become closer. Next thing I know, my sister's now become this all-conquering sorceress. So, it's a bit freaky. What I love in the story, my character is just this human that is seeing these two incredibly powerful women find themselves."
We'll never know what could have happened, and as the series was based on a single illustrated novel by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, there's no sequel in print form to guide us, either.
Cursed season 2 trailer: When can we see a Netflix promo?
As a second season of Cursed is not to be, there's no trailer to watch. Instead, check out one of the many terrible King Arthur movies available online – or you could always just read the book.
Cursed season one is now available to watch on Netflix.
