Netflix has revealed that The Witcher has broken a record as the show had 76 million member households watch it in its first four weeks – making it the platform's biggest opening season for a TV series so far.

The Henry Cavill-fronted fantasy show's record-breaking numbers come as part of a change in how Netflix calculates its viewership figures.

Up until now, Netflix had based its viewing figures on accounts who'd watched at least 70% of one episode of a series or 70% of a feature film.

But now, the streaming service is calculating its numbers based on accounts who've only played an episode or a film for as little as two minutes.

"Our new methodology is similar to the BBC iPlayer in their rankings based on 'requests' for the title, 'most popular' articles on The New York Times, which include those who opened the articles, and YouTube view counts," Netflix said in a report (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"This way, short and long titles are treated equally, levelling the playing field for all types of our content including interactive content, which has no fixed length."

Another hit among Netflix subscribers proves to be You, as its second season was watched by 54 million households in its first four weeks.

As for movies, Michael Bay's 6 Underground starring Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds was watched by 83 million households during its first four weeks of release.

The Witcher is now streaming worldwide on Netflix.
