James Newman has insisted that depictions of drug use and sexual activity in Skins are presented realistically.

The actor, however, who plays Tony Snyder in the series, told MTV News that Skins only uses graphic content if it enhances the effectiveness of each character's journey.

"Things like this certainly happen [in real life]," he said. "I don't think they necessarily happen with the frequency that it happens on Skins, but it's TV and we want it to be entertaining and it helps from a standpoint on sex and drugs."

He continued "Anytime you see sex and drugs on Skins, it's about the story. It's never that for the sake of that."

Skins airs on Mondays on MTV.
