Rob Lowe is set to head up a new spin-off of 9-1-1 titled 9-1-1: Lone Star.

The show will air on Fox this coming autumn, although we don't know all that much about it just yet.

But we do know that it will see Lowe as a "sophisticated New York cop who, along with his son, relocates to Austin, and must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in his own life".

The original show premiered in January last year, before being renewed for a second season which is still ongoing. A third season of the main series is also in the works.

The reasoning behind the spin-off is to explore 9-1-1 via a range of narrative angles.

In a statement, Fox entertainment president Michael Thorn said: "The beauty of having a hit drama like 9-1-1 from the genius minds of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear is it allows you to explore thrilling stories as told through an array of distinctive characters."

It also recently emerged that Rob Lowe turned down the opportunity to play Dr Derek Shepard in Grey's Anatomy.

While on WTF with Marc Maron, the actor revealed that he could have been playing the character instead of Patrick Dempsey.

"Dude, I turned down Grey's Anatomy," Lowe said. "To play McDreamy. That's probably cost me $70 million! Eh, it's just money," he laughed.

Yeah, just a bit of spare change, Rob.
