Note: This article contains spoilers for Killing Eve season 2, episode 5, 'Smell Ya Later', which has aired in the US but not in the UK at the time of writing.

After the shocking events of the season 1 finale, in which Eve stabbed Villanelle, the first four episodes of season 2 have kept them apart, teasing us with an inevitable reunion.

Well, it finally happened.

'Smell Ya Later' saw the obsessed Eve put a hit on herself, bringing Villanelle back into her life in a way that reflected their first meeting.

But why has it taken them so long to reunite, and how long can this last? Well, showrunner Emerald Fennell revealed all to The Hollywood Reporter.

She said: "After the stabbing and being in the proximity of each other, they needed time to recover, they needed time to just feel out what their lives are like apart.

"But I think the truth of it is that these women are like water going down a plug hole. They're being sucked down and there's no way that they're going to stay apart...

"It just felt like a really exciting thing to do, to see what happens when they're suddenly out in the daylight and how that affects their relationship. We wanted to see what would happen when they were legitimately together because so much of what makes up obsession is the fantasy of it."

Calling their relationship a "fatal attraction", Fennell teased it not lasting very long.

"Can you ever really just leave them alone in an office talking about what to get Jerry for his birthday or that the fax machine is broken?" she asked. "I think we all know that isn't possible, so this is not a status quo that can be upheld for very long because it's just too dangerous."

Killing Eve season 2 is currently airing on AMC and BBC America in the US, while we're still waiting for it to air in the UK.

Since the show's already out across the pond, that means there are already reviews out there if you really want to know if the show works without Phoebe Waller-Bridge. A third season has been commissioned with yet another new showrunner.
