Sorry The Big Bang Theory fans, the countdown to the last-ever episode has officially begun.

The seven-time Primetime Emmy Award-winning sitcom will be coming to an end this spring with a super-sized hour-long episode bidding a final farewell to Sheldon, Penny, Leonard and all the rest.

A just released promo has confirmed that CBS in the US will air the series finale on Thursday, May 16 at 8pm ET. E4 will air it at a later date in the UK.

Fans sad about the end of the show shouldn't feel like they're alone. Earlier this month, Mayim Bialik opened up on her YouTube channel about the "grief" that will come with leaving the sitcom behind.

"All things must end, even the good things must end," she added. "I have to be in acceptance of what is instead of lamenting what was and fearing what's next."

Luckily, there's still more of The Big Bang Theory universe to be explored beyond May's finale. Prequel series Young Sheldon was recently renewed for a third and fourth season — meaning Jim Parsons will still be playing Sheldon (through narration, at least) until 2021.

CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl also hinted in February that she'd recently had talks with Big Bang's creator Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros TV about making another spinoff series.

"The ball is squarely in their court," Kahl told reporters at the TCA press tour. "If they want to talk to us about it, we are here to listen."

The Big Bang Theory airs on CBS in the US and on E4 and Netflix in the UK.
