Abducted in Plain Sight had us scratching our heads when it landed on Netflix earlier this year.

The 90-minute documentary was actually first released back in May 2017 in the US, but it went viral once it was added to the streaming service in January – largely because it's honestly one of the maddest things we have ever seen.

It documents the story of the Broberg family who, against the backdrop of the '70s, were manipulated and ultimately plagued by their trusted neighbour and friend Robert 'B' Berchtold. Unbeknownst to them – at least at first – he had been grooming one of the daughters, 12-year-old Jan, before abducting her. Twice.

Filmmaker Skye Borgman has now revealed that, in order to streamline the film, she had to make certain cuts. These edits included, amongst other things, commentary from a forensic psychologist, who helped get a 'read' on Berchtold.

"She explained how much work it takes to actually kidnap somebody," Borgman told Vanity Fair. "That’s why it doesn’t happen more often, because there’s so much planning involved, and there’s so much deceit that goes into it. To be able to actually kidnap somebody is incredibly difficult.

"Then to be able to maintain this ruse for years and years really takes somebody who has very little empathy for anybody else. It really does take a sociopath."

It is because of these cuts that the Abducted in Plain Sight director would be keen to one day produce a sequel. During her interview with Vanity Fair, Borgman said that she would like to "explore the different topics that we didn't have time to really dive deep into".

Discussing some of these potential talking points, she continued: "Also grooming and brainwashing — there are really interesting, intricate things that happen, and we touch on both of those topics in the documentary, but I'd love to explore those more. I guess in a perfect world, it'd be sort of a trilogy of films."

Whether or not this follow-up project would get the go-ahead or even end up on Netflix remains to be seen.

But based on the audience that Abducted in Plain Sight drummed up, we're sure it would have plenty of interest.

Abducted in Plain Sight is available to stream now on Netflix.
