True Detective's third season might almost be over, but it's now unveiled Michael Rooker as a new mysterious character.

Fans of The Walking Dead will recognise the actor from his days as Daryl Dixon's troublesome brother Merle, in addition to his blue-skinned role of Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Rooker has been cast as Hoyt, the shadowy billionaire who owns Hoyt Foods – spotted in the recent sixth episode in photographic form.

The disappearance of young Julie Purcell was connected directly to the Hoyt family during the latest instalment of the show, after it was revealed that the 'Pink Room' she was hidden in was located in an underground section of the family's manor.

Hoyt's significance is slowly increasing in the series, so Rooker certainly has a meaty part to get his teeth into over the final two episodes.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has also teased that he has a "really wild" idea for a fourth season.

He revealed: "I dream of making a TV show where you have recurring characters and don't have to reinvent the wheel every time. After one of these I always feel so depleted. But I have to say… I have an idea."

"It's wild. It's really, really wild," he continued.

"Where do you even go after this [season]? I just had a lead character who's 35, 45 and 70 all at the same time and this mystery that has to reach false resolutions and keep going into the future without cheating the audience and all these complicated structural elements."

True Detective continues on Sunday (February 17) on HBO in the US and on Monday (February 18) on Sky Atlantic/NOW TV in the UK.
