Gotham star Cameron Monaghan might have just hinted that the show will make an explicit reference to the Joker before it ends.

The actor plays Jeremiah Valeska, having also previously played Jeremiah's twin brother Jerome. Both of the characters were inspired by the Joker, but neither have been named as the iconic Batman villain.

There continues to be speculation that Jeremiah is indeed the Joker, although last May, Monaghan revealed that the Joker's name as well as his trademark green hair were "off limits" due to a "decision from high-up as they wanted to reserve these for films".

It looks like things have changed.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Monaghan said that Gotham has now been "given certain liberties" and it will tie in with scenes taking place in the future.

"That [the legal issues with the Joker] was the case when I talked about it prior," Monaghan teased. "I will say we've been given certain liberties in this final season that we haven't been given before that's going to make itself pretty apparent as you watch it.

"All I'll say is, when you have an episode that's a full-on Batman episode running around in the future, you're going to have characters that you'll expect to see.

"I don't think it's a spoiler to say at this point that it's 10 years in the future – that's been talked about openly by the producers and the showrunners. I don't want to say exactly what my role in that is, but it was kickass. It's one of the coolest opportunities I've ever had."

The show has started its final season, and last week's premiere episode killed off a major character.

Gotham season 5 airs on Fox in the US. No release date has been announced for the UK yet.
