When it was announced that Gotham's fifth and final season was going to be a shorter run than what we're used to, we wondered if the team would be able to wrap up everything properly.

There's the No Man's Land adaptation, which is a big story that needs room to breathe (looking at you, Dark Knight Rises), getting Bruce Wayne to the point where he becomes Batman and all the various other heroes and villains running around.

But the people behind the show don't seem nervous about it, in fact it's quite the opposite.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the show's executive producer John Stephens said: "We've been planning [this arc] for about three years now.

"It's a cataclysmic event in the history of the city, so we had to save it for the end. Once we knew that we were only going to do one more season, it was like, now's the time!

"We're telling the long-term story of the city that created Batman so we want to feel like that story came to a satisfying end."

James Gordon actor Ben McKenzie chipped in to add that: "We definitely are trying to satisfy a lot of those demands, those requests for certain specific characters to appear, specific interactions to occur," in order to create a really fan pleasing season.

The series will be back on Fox in the US on Thursday, January 3, 2019 – but no UK premiere date has been announced yet.

Gotham airs on Fox in the US and is available for streaming on Netflix in the UK.
