Gotham fans who have been anticipating the arrival of David Mazouz's Bruce Wayne as a fully emerged Batman and wanting to see him tackle Gotham's villain problem could just find themselves in luck in the fifth and final season.

The show's stars have teased that Gotham fans can expect to see some familiar Batman v Joker storylines in the series' final run, with Mazouz sharing that the relationship between Bruce and Jeremiah (Cameron Monaghan) this season is "very reminiscent of the Joker/Batman relationship".

And, considering the show has never actually come out and said that either of Monaghan's characters Jerome or Jeremiah are definitively the Joker, this sounds like pretty much all the confirmation we need.

"Bruce and Jeremiah this season is very reminiscent of the Joker/Batman relationship," Mazouz told The Hollywood Reporter.

"The Joker lives for the game of toying with Batman but he never wants to defeat Batman because then his joy would be gone. He thrives off of escaping from Arkham and creating problems for Batman and this is no different – Jeremiah thinks he's best friends with Bruce and he doesn't want to kill or hurt his best friend.

"He just wants to hurt everyone around his best friend."

Unfortunately for Jeremiah, Bruce doesn't quite feel the same way about it all, with Mazouz explaining Bruce's moral quandary.

"Bruce hates him but he can't end the cycle because he's vowed not to kill him," Mazouz adds. "But it's very exciting how Bruce takes him down and there is one of the most iconic fights which is the moment I'm most excited for this season.

"It has a lot of hints to a couple of very famous Joker storylines between Bruce and Jeremiah."

As for Jeremiah himself, actor Cameron Monaghan teases that the villain has seen his ego grow over the last few months because he actually succeeded with his evil plan.

"We're seeing a development in Jeremiah's personality and temperament," he said. "At the end of last season, he did something really weird for a villain in which he basically succeeded."

He continued: "He's still very intelligent, a genius, but his genius is now obsessive in weird places. He's slipping in his sanity.

"The majority of his plot line this season is his strange in his mind 'friendship' with Bruce. It's this last little glimpse of his vulnerability and humanity within his relationship with Bruce."

The fifth season of Gotham, which premieres on Thursday (January 3) will be its last, although we are being treated to 12 episodes during the run rather than the usual 10.

And it looks like Gotham will be going out with a bang too, with the very explosive trailer for the new season showing Gotham sectioned off from the rest of the world in scenes similar to The Dark Knight Rises.

Between the inclusion of some iconic villains like Bane, Catwoman, The Riddler, Harley Quinn and The Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow... nobody could accuse the show of not going out in style.

Gotham airs on Fox in the US and is available for streaming on Netflix in the UK.
