The Walking Dead has leapt several years forward in time over the course of its ninth season so far. But one prominent character has been – and still is – missing.

Dwight, played by Austin Amelio, has not been sighted since being exiled by Daryl (Norman Reedus) at the end of season 8. In addition to being a major character on the TV show, Dwight is a significant figure in the comics.

So is he gone for good? Or could he make a return?

Speaking at Walker Stalker Con in New Jersey (via Business Insider), Amelio suggested that fans may not have seen the last of him.

"He's not dead," he said. "That's all I can say. He's alive. He's alive in the world somewhere."

When he was asked about storyline possibilities, should the writers introduce Dwight again, Amelio replied: "There's so many different ways you can go with him. There's the comic book, there's Sherry's story, there's me being with the Alexandrians. I have no idea.

"I have full faith in the writers. They do an awesome job, so I'm sure they'd bring me back in an incredible way."

It's definitely worth considering that if Dwight does indeed return, it might not necessarily be on the main TV show.

The Walking Dead will return on Sunday, February 10 on AMC in the US and most likely on Monday, February 11 on FOX in the UK. You can also catch up on the show via NOW TV.
