Fans have been impatiently waiting for season eight of The Walking Dead for a while now, not least because we'll finally get to discover what that Old Man Rick thing from the trailer is about.

Unfortunately for us, it looks like we'll be waiting a little while longer yet – because the rumours that all will be revealed in the season premiere weren't exactly accurate.

Back in July, creator Robert Kirkman teased that fans will learn what the appearance of Old Man Rick means "in the first episode". Scott Gimple, on the other hand, thinks otherwise.

In a recent interview with TVLine, the showrunner confirmed that any "definitive answer" about Old Man Rick won't appear in the premiere after all. Dammit.

"We will not get the definitive answer as to what that's about in the premiere," he explained. "That won't come until about halfway into the season."

If the thought of having to wait a few more episodes to find out the truth is too much to bear, then you can always check out our theory about what the Old Man Rick time jump means for TWD.

And there's always the comic series to tide you over, too.

The new season of The Walking Dead – which will return to our screens next month – has been billed as a "kinetic, action-packed offensive" in a recent official synopsis.

"This season, Rick brings 'All Out War' to Negan and his forces," it reads. "The Saviors are larger, better-equipped, and ruthless – but Rick and the unified communities are fighting for the promise of a brighter future."

We can't wait.

The Walking Dead launches its eighth season on October 22 on AMC in the US and October 23 on FOX in the UK.
