One of the most shocking and unsettling incidents to happen on MAFS was when groom David Cannon scrubbed the toilet with his wife Haley Vernon's toothbrush, all to get back at her for allegedly kissing Michael Goonan.

David recorded the disgusting act and sent the video to his co-stars, and after the toothbrush was put back next to the sink, Hayley continued to use it for several days afterwards.

Channel Nine executive Adrian Swift later admitted that he didn't want to air the incident, but had little choice because it was "fundamental" to the drama.

"In MAFS, we never try to expunge anything that's happened and we never try to make anything happen," he explained. "There was a series of MAFS where one of the partners put a toothbrush down the toilet. 'We're commercial television. Oh, God. We're not putting that to air'.

"That thing was so fundamental to all the drama that happened on the show for the following ten episodes that you couldn't expunge it. You had to put it in. It broke my heart to do it and it caused all sorts of kerfuffle but we had no choice but to put it in."

Olivia Frazer and Domenica Calarco butted heads aplenty during MAFS Australia season nine, but things really kicked off during a girls' night at the couples' retreat.

Sitting across from each other at the dinner table, Olivia told Domenica to reconsider how she "speaks to people", adding: "I'm bored of your f**king voice just yelling all the time!"

The comment was a sore spot for Domenica, who yelled back: "My entire f**king life I've been f**king told that my voice isn't f**king enough", before smashing her glass onto the table in frustration.

Domenica has since admitted that she regrets her actions, saying: "I should have removed myself, I should have walked away. I'm not excusing the behaviour and I'm not blaming it on anyone, and I want to make that known."

Although Nikita Jasmine made her mark with a number of explosive on-camera moments after marrying Ant Poole on season six of MAFS UK, she was eventually removed from the show due to an off-camera incident where security had to get involved.

A spokesperson for E4 programming said in a statement at the time: "The wellbeing of cast and crew is our utmost priority at all times throughout production and beyond.

"During filming, a situation escalated off camera and Nikita displayed a level of aggression that was unacceptable and breached our agreed code of conduct on behaviour.

"As a result, she was asked to leave the experiment. All involved have been offered support and Nikita has since apologised and resolved the situation with those involved."

Nikita later said she was "truly gutted" to have left the show, adding: "I loved every minute of the experience but it was a rollercoaster of emotions, and sometimes they got the better of me."

Davina Rankin and Dean Wells made headlines in 2018 when they became the first-ever MAFS AU couple to become embroiled in a cheating scandal.

While Davina was initially paired with Ryan Gallagher and Dean with Tracey Jewel, the two soon developed feelings for one another and agreed to leave their respective partners.

In a shock twist, however, Dean completely blindsided Davina by coming clean about their affair to the entire group, before revealing that he didn't want to walk away from Tracey.

Although Dean and Tracey tried to work through their marriage, and Dean eventually revealed that he was falling in love with Tracey, she walked away from him on the final decision day.

Carolina Santos and Daniel Holmes sent shockwaves throughout the entire cast when they came clean about their scandalous affair during a commitment ceremony.

The pair then asked if they could re-join the experiment as a new couple (the audacity!), prompting a mass walkout from their fellow contestants. However, the experts dismissed their request, forcing the couple to depart the show.

Carolina and Daniel continued to pursue their romance outside of the experiment, though they eventually confirmed their split 10 months later.

During MAFS Australia season eight, Rebecca Zemek briefly parted ways with her TV spouse Jake Edwards to tend to her sick dog back in Perth.

The bride was given a camera so she could record video diaries to keep her co-stars updated, but she revealed a little bit more about her trip home than she had intended.

Rebecca thought she had hit the 'stop' button after recording one of her updates (which was shown to the entire cast, by the way), but the camera continued to roll... and a man could be seen approaching her before they were heard kissing passionately off camera.

To make matters even worse, Rebecca tried to cover it up by telling Jake that the mystery man was her brother. You really couldn't make this up.

When it was made clear that absolutely no-one believed this, Rebecca came clean and admitted: "My dog needed transporting and I reached out to an old burn, who actually took Oscar to the clinic for me.

"When I saw him, emotion kind of sparked with us. And we did... We shared a kiss."

After failing to find love with their assigned partners, Troy Delmege and Carly Bowyer met up outside of the experiment and fell in love, leaving jaws on the floor when they arrived at the final dinner party as a couple.

But no-one was as shocked as Troy's former partner Ashley, who was furious at Troy and Carly for not giving her a heads-up first.

Despite being 'married' to other people, Ines Bašić and Sam Ball sparked outrage when they decided to embark on a secret affair.

But, when they started to discuss their future beyond the show, Sam appeared to have second thoughts.

Sam eventually made the decision to leave the experiment – and he even stood Ines up at the reunion.

"I've gone through life fending for myself so it's really hard for me to open up to a man," a teary Ines told her co-stars at the reunion.

"I chose to see the best in him, but, like Elizabeth did say, he says one thing and does another. It's sad, because some of the things he promised me were huge."
