Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson met on Season 16 of American Idol, while they were chasing after the same dream. But somewhere along the way, the two young contestants fell in love, and shocked viewers by revealing their relationship on the singing competition show's finale on Monday night (May 21).

After Ryan Seacrest announced that Poppe and Hutchinson were the final two contestants left in the running, the pair took to the stage to sing a duet of 'Over the Rainbow' and 'What a Wonderful World'.

However, moments before, they came clean about their secret romance, allowing them to hold hands and give each other googly eyes throughout the performance (see below).

Ultimately, Poppe beat her boyfriend and won the competition (it's Kermit the Frog wot won it), but Hutchinson took the loss in his stride.

"MY GIRLFRIEND WON AMERICAN IDOL!!!" he wrote on Twitter. "No one deserved it more than you babe. I am honored to know you and even more honored to call you mine. Don't forget about me. I love you."

After the cat was out of the bag, everyone wanted to know how the couple was able to keep their relationship a secret for so long. On Good Morning America, Hutchinson shared that he and Poppe met during Hollywood week.

"I definitely saw her, and instantly knew that I was into her," he said. "I just had to take some time to convince her."

Poppe clearly gave in, and is now completely smitten with her new beau. After winning Idol, she shared a photo on Instagram of her and Hutchinson hugging on stage. In the caption, she said her boyfriend was "one of the best gifts" the show had given her.

"This guy captured my heart from the start and showed me what love truly means," she added.

"I've never cared for or adored another person so much, @calebleemusic you mean so much to me and I'm so blessed to be able to have had you alongside me throughout this journey and hopefully for many more moons to come."
