ITV has announced the release date of For the Love of Dogs season 12 – and it's soon.

The docuseries, formerly presented by the late Paul O'Grady, will return to screens on April 16 at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with viewers once again going behind the scenes at the famous Battersea Dogs & Cats home.

The new series will mark the presenting debut of This Morning host Alison Hammond, who was announced as O'Grady's replacement in January this year, following his death last March.

The Bake Off star will spend time with the home's furry residents and help them find a new place to live.

"I am very aware that I can never replace the iconic Paul in this wonderful series," said Alison of her new role. "But if I can continue to shine a light on the brilliant work done at Battersea and help to tell the stories of these beautiful dogs, then it will be an absolute privilege to give it my all.

"I can't wait to share the joy of their searches for new loving forever homes and hopefully make lots of furry friends of my own along the way!"

O'Grady, who was also a long-standing ambassador for the animal charity, presented For the Love of Dogs for 11 series, with the 11th season airing posthumously last April.

ITV recently commemorated the late star one year on from his passing with a special tribute programme.

The Life and Death of Lily Savage featured early footage of O'Grady's show-business beginnings and career highlights alongside interviews with his family and friends, including Sir Ian McKellen, Julian Clary, Alan Carr and Graham Norton.

Viewers also saw O'Grady posthumously on screens again in March in his final TV project, which was filmed prior to his death. The two-part documentary special Paul O'Grady's Great Elephant Adventure saw the late star travel to Thailand and spend time with one of the planet's most endangered animals at various rescue and rehabilitation centres.

Episode 2 of Paul O'Grady's Great Elephant Adventure airs on April 7 at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with the first episode available to stream on demand now.

For the Love of Dogs returns for a new series on April 16 on ITV1 and ITVX.
