Squid Game: The Challenge will return to the screens, with Netflix renewing the show for a second season.

The spin-off to the hit South Korean drama follows contestants as they compete in a variety of tasks and challenges, with the victor securing a $4.56 million cash prize.

Following the success upon its debut, Netflix confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the show will return for a second season, with the post including a link to apply for a spot on the roster.

News of a renewal order should hardly come as a surprise, with series producers Stephen Lambert and John Hay recently expressing their enthusiasm for further episodes.

“That's all in the hands of our dear friends at Netflix, if they have the desire whether they want to do it again," Lambert said. "If viewers love the show, and from what we understand, the people do… then who knows, maybe they'll want to do another season.

“It's brilliant that it's landed as well as it has, and we're really enjoying all the responses to it,” added Hay. “It probably is too early to judge, but we would obviously love to [do season 2]. We think it's a game with potential, so let's see.”

Despite the strong viewing figures, Squid Game: The Challenge has received criticism from some audience members and contestants, with two players reported to be considering whether to take legal action after alleging they were injured during production of the show.

A spokesperson for Squid Game: The Challenge said: "No lawsuit has been filed by any of the Squid Game contestants. We take the welfare of our contestants extremely seriously."

The finale for the first season of Squid Game: The Challenge is due to air tomorrow (December 7), with Sam (Player 16), Mai (Player 287) and Phill (Player 451) battling it out to be crowned champion and go home millions richer.

Meanwhile, a release date for season two of Squid Game itself is yet to be confirmed, although several actors are confirmed to have joined the drama's cast.

Returning cast members from season one of the drama include Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo, who are due to reprise their roles as Seong Gi-hun, the Front Man, police detective Jun-ho and the Recruiter.

Squid Game season 1 is streaming now on Netflix. Season 2 has been confirmed. Squid Game: The Challenge also streams on Netflix.
