Love Island has been mired in criticism in recent days, with viewers voicing their concern about both the behaviour of the boys in the villa and an episode of Aftersun.
Following a raft of complaints to Ofcom, ITV has defended the spin-off show – as well as Love Island host Laura Whitmore – insisting that it does not "condone trolling" in any form, or "any subsequent elevation" of hurtful or abusive comments.
The broadcasting watchdog confirmed it had received over 2,000 complaints relating to Sunday's (July 17) extended 'Movie Night' episode and a further 427 about an episode of Aftersun, with viewers citing comments made about Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, as well as the treatment of Jacques O'Neill during his exit interview.

In a new statement, ITV addressed the concerns raised by fans, insisting that the series is mindful of its duty of care to Islanders.
"Laura is the presenter of the show, and part of that role is to pose questions to the panel and discuss events in the villa," a spokesperson told Metro.co.uk.
Referring to an Aftersun discussion about Ekin-Su's alleged fumble with George Tasker, they added: "We do not condone trolling against either our host or our Islanders and any subsequent elevation of these comments."
In a second statement, ITV also defended Jacques' Aftersun interview, arguing that his "welfare was prioritised at all times ahead of and during his appearance".

"This included a full briefing with show producers to outline the show's content and likely questioning, a conversation with Laura before and after the show was recorded, and chaperoning from both a welfare producer and a member of his family while he was in studio," the channel confirmed.
"Should an Islander not wish to participate in the Aftersun recording, we would always respect that decision."
Love Island airs on ITV2 and is available via catch up on ITV Hub and Britbox.
