For the first time in 14 years, a lucky contestant has walked away from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire with the eye-watering jackpot.

The lucky winner, Donald Fear, who fans on social media have dubbed "the best-ever player", zoomed through the questions without any issues at all really, making the rest of us wish we'd paid more attention in school – and he's now officially a millionaire.

Donald, who is a history and politics teacher, isn't the only clever one in his family, as when he reached the £1,000 lifeline, host Jeremy Clarkson revealed that Donald's brother had been on the show previously and walked away with a very impressive £500,000.

Clarkson revealed last month that there would be a contestant who went all the way to the end on this series.

He said he was "thrilled" for Donald.

"I can't wait for the viewers to see it and I want to watch it back too. I was just in awe of this contestant and think they are probably the best the show has ever had in its 22-year history. It was a joy to sit and watch it unfold," explained Clarkson.

"It felt like we whizzed through the 15 questions and all of a sudden, confetti was falling from the ceiling and I was saying, 'You've just won one million pounds.' I wasn't sure I'd ever get to utter those immortal six words and I'm not embarrassed to say, it was a little emotional but boy did it feel good."

It was certainly enjoyable to watch, with Clarkson revealing before the final question that people from other productions had started to wander into the studio to watch.

Talking of that final question: "In 1718, which pirate died in battle off the coast of what is now North Carolina?"

Obviously, Donald knew the answer was Blackbeard because he taught Piracy to a class of Year 8 students at school – see, if we'd paid more attention during Year 8 history lessons, we could be millionaires, too.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire airs on ITV.
