The Grand Tour's trio of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have revealed that things got pretty hairy at one point filming season 4.

Brilliantly titled The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen, the new season of the Amazon series will see the boys ditch cars to instead travel up Vietnam's Mekong Delta in boats.

And after confirming that they were 'almost killed' out at sea while filming the show, James admitted that it was one of the scariest things they've ever done together.

"I got separated from the camera boat," he said. "My camera boat was having problems as well. It was taking on water. I think it had a few problems with the engine as well. That led to lots of problems with the camera kit and all the rest of it. So I was on my own in the middle of the sea, sort of pretty much halfway across – so you had no choice, really, but to keep going.

"And I thought, 'Well, I am actually on my own now, in a boat. I don't have a life raft or anything. There are no helicopters following us, because they don't know we're doing it. What can you do?' So I just kept going."

On the scary moments, Richard added: "Well, it was good, wasn't it, that we're all really outside of our comfort zone? I think that's quite good. Let's be honest: nobody tunes into our show to watch three middle-aged men have a nice, relaxing time.

"So if we start and are already out of our comfort zone, that's all good. And I was very aware all along: 'Hang on, remember, just because we're making a TV show does not mean we're in some magical, protective bubble'."

Jeremy, meanwhile, was more concerned about making excellent television. "To be honest, I was thinking it'd make good television, because: A) I can drive boats, and I've been in rough seas," he said.

"I've been in small boats in rough seas; and that boat of mine was pretty strong. So I didn't really feel – that's not bravado. I just genuinely didn't feel particularly threatened."

The Grand Tour presents: Seamen will be available on Amazon Prime on Friday, December 13.
