The 27th series of Top Gear has got its key in the ignition and is ready and raring to go.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about how the new batch of episodes differ, presenter Chris Harris said: "It's a little bit different – I think it's more relaxed, and more approachable. The bandwidth of the show is greater.

"I think beforehand we had to try and insert some humour or levity into the more serious aspects of the show to retain the non-specialist audience.

"Now, these guys are so great – when we're together there's so much fun and joy in those big adventures. I think that gives us the chance for the straight bits of the show to be almost straighter.

"So the petrol-heads will be happier, because there won't be a sort of deliberate funny in a power test of a super car.

"You don't need it, because they're being so funny elsewhere in the show. So I think the petrol-heads will be happier and the general audience will be happier as well. It's just funnier."

He added: "I'm really pleased with it. Everyone I've worked with on the show before, it's been great fun and I'm proud of all that work, but this is a different Top Gear. I think it's broader."

The motoring show has promised plenty more petrol-fuelled stunts, but when will it get underway?

Here's everything we know so far about the new episodes.

It's official: Top Gear will return on Sunday, June 16 on BBC2 at 8pm.

It will also be the first without Matt LeBlanc, who has been with the show since 2016.

The Friends legend stepped down due to the demands filming was making on his family life.

Top Gear series 27 presenters: Who'll host it?

It's all change, and the biggest shake-up since the days of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May when the original trio hot-footed it to Amazon Prime for The Grand Tour after Clarkson’s infamous attack on a colleague.

Racing car driver Chris Harris will be the only remaining presenter from the last series, with his former co-host Rory Reid now fronting web-only spin-off Extra Gear.

Replacing Reid and LeBlanc are England cricket legend Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness, the one-time Phoenix Nights star-turned-frontman of ITV dating show Take Me Out.

McGuinness did host a show called Stars In Their Cars, which probably gave him the edge when it came to winning the gig.

Flintoff…well, he famously bought a Lamborghini that he couldn’t fit into. "I don’t half feel like a knobhead," he told The Sun.

McGuinness also echoed Harris's comments about some new and exciting change-ups in store for fans.

"There's little changes like when we go on the foreign trips we interact with the locals a lot more now, which has never been done before," he told Digital Spy.

"I like the fact that it's just a little bit broader for everybody. I want to get as many people watching it as we can, as well as the petrol-heads."

While fan reaction to their appointment and the sidelining of Reid has been mixed, one person who is excited is Chris Harris.

He spoke to Digital Spy earlier this year, before filming with his new fellow drivers: "They are superb. They're great fun. They're exactly what you'd think they'd be. In fact, they're a bit more than that. I'm dead excited about it."

During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Clarkson was asked about what he thought of the new presenters, to which he said: "James and Richard always wish them all the best. I don't. No I do," he backtracked, before shaking his head. "No I don't."

Top Gear series 27 trailer: When can I watch it?

It's here, ladies and gents, and we've popped it below for your viewing pleasure.

They've even shared a first look teaser in which the lads experience a rather bumpy ride.

And if that wasn't enough, there's also a trailer for all of the flashy (and not so flashy) motors you can expect to see this series.

Top Gear series 27 locations: Where did they film?

The teaser trailer featured a trip to a Welsh rally track, with Flintoff managing to tip over a 1995 Daimler hearse – known as The Undertaker – and McGuinness in the back, yelling: "Go easy on the car, it’s a prototype!"

Harris spoke about where he'd like the series to head...

"I have a wish list," he said. "I think there’s a whole load of Africa to explore... I think there’s more of the subcontinent, of India, that we can definitely explore. And America is the gift that keeps on giving."

And it looks like he got his wish. In the show's official description, "the brutal heat of the Ethiopian desert" is mentioned, as is "the sweltering Borneo rainforest", "the wilds of Iceland", and the less glamorous "pedestrianised shopping district of downtown Mansfield".

Top Gear series 27 specials: Will they return?

So series 27 is almost here, but will there be any specials?

Possibly, though the Top Gear team is clearly putting extra focus on Extra Gear and Rory Reid.

"There are twelve episodes a year but that’s not enough for Top Gear," said Clare Pizey, the show’s head of editorial content. "It’s a much bigger brand than twelve hours a year. So what do we do about that? Well this is what we do about that. We need to be much more fleet-of-foot. We need to create much more content. And Rory is the face of that. We never say never to him appearing on the main show again. This is the future."

As yet, no announcements for who will be joining the boys for this series.

Maybe Freddie and Paddy will pull in their celebrity mates? We’d love to see Peter Kay doing a Car Share-Top Gear mash-up.
