Kate Garraway found herself in a spot of bother after a joke went wrong on Good Morning Britain today (August 10).

The presenter had beforehand been discussing internet sensation the Gator Crusader, Michael Womer, who has become famous thanks to videos of him feeding alligators with his mouth.

As a tribute to the US online star, Richard Arnold suggested he and Kate re-enacted one of the film clips.

He then pulled out a sausage he'd brought into the ITV studios from home.

"I had to bring my own one in after seeing that man feeding an alligator in such an extraordinary fashion," the showbiz guru joked.

"Since you [Kate] have a similar overbite to the alligator, I thought we could recreate this moment. Pucker up my love."

Richard then put the sausage in his mouth and seconds later, Kate snatched it with her teeth.

Unfortunately, all didn't go to plan as she then started coughing and choking uncontrollably.

Co-host Ben Shephard then had to step in by patting her on the back until she was able to regain her composure.

Kate said: "I can't believe I nearly choked to death on a sausage live on air – it was one of those moments.

"I put my all into that."

Despite the dramatic episode, Richard didn't seem too concerned and quipped that it was the first time the presenter had ever put much effort into hosting the show.

After Kate had pulled herself together, he joked: "Well, it's a relief to the nation to know your gag reflex is still working!"

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am.
