Doctor Who writer and Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss is also driving for a female Doctor after Peter Capaldi announced his intention to quit earlier this week.
Gatiss - who has written numerous episodes of the show, along with spin-off novels and audio plays - told BBC Radio 2's Simon Mayo he was very supportive of a woman Doctor.
He said: "I think it'd be really good for the show.
"It's been back for 12 years, which means it's not the new kid on the block anymore, it's not a revival, it's been back for a long time.
"It's the sort of thing that would bring an amazing new audience to it. I think it'd be fantastic. But who knows, it's up to Chris Chibnall."
Peter Capaldi, Eighth Doctor Paul McGann and former assistant Billie Piper have all backed the idea of casting a female Doctor to keep the series feeling fresh and current.

Speaking about Capaldi's exit, Gatiss said: "I was very sad because I think he's been absolutely brilliant, but I guess he's going with Steven Moffatt so there's a sort of symmetry to it, isn't there?"
He went on to explain that he didn't know if he'd continue writing for the show, as he doesn't have a permanent space within the writing team.
So who could play a female Doctor? Well, Capaldi is backing Harry Potter's Frances de la Tour (Hagrid's beaux, Madame Olympe Maxime).
Meanwhile, McGann thought Dr Strange's Tilda Swinton would be the perfect fit; and another former Doctor, David Tennant, is backing his Broadchurch co-star Olivia Coleman.
Capaldi's last episode will be the Christmas special in 2017, which will also bid farewell to longtime showrunner Steven Moffatt.
Doctor Who's 10th series begins on Saturday, April 15 on BBC One.
