In all the years we've loved Red Dwarf, we've also felt really sorry for Robert Llewellyn for the gruelling makeup process needed to become Kryten.

Not only does it take ages to complete, but he has to walk around in a sweaty mask and heavy robot suit all day in sweltering studio conditions.

"Only a moron would do it," Robert said. "Only a moron would do it for a really long time. Highly intelligent people full of respect and dignity would maybe do it once."

Well, after years of moaning, his castmates finally found out just how bad it is. Speaking at last night's BAFTA screening of Red Dwarf XI, the cast revealed that one episode in series 12 will see Rimmer, Lister and Cat transform into mechanoids - complete with Kryten-style mask.

Chris Barrie said: "All of us go through the Kryten experience. For three filming days we all had a mask, and I can tell you that two and a half weeks ago I had a hernia operation, and I'd rather go through that again!"

Craig Charles also hated it, saying: "We're always taking the mickey out of him, saying 'stop moaning Robert!' I wore the mask for three days, and it's the most uncomfortable thing. It was so bad that I thought I was crying, but I was sweating out of my eyelids."

Chris added: "The first day, I expired at the end of the day. I couldn't handle that, I just went home!"

Red Dwarf XI begins with 'Twentica' on Thursday, September 22 at 9pm on Dave. Watch the trailer below:
