Just hours after the John Lewis Christmas ad dropped, The Boy & The Piano has already left some viewers confused.
In previous years, the ads have delivered a clear festive message along with some obvious product placement, like the starry night lamp from the 2017 Moz the Monster ad which sold out in hours.
But as many people have pointed out on Twitter, this latest commercial is more about Elton John's life story rather than launching a new toy range. Or as one viewer put it: "Good luck to John Lewis trying to shift cuddly Elton John toys this year".
Although this ad doesn't rely on product promotion as it has done in the past, the heartwarming film does show how one Christmas gift in particular – a piano belonging to Elton's grandmother – went on to inspire the music icon's life. So, does John Lewis even sell pianos? It does now.
Soon after the advert was officially unveiled on social media, the department store's website was updated with several different pianos and keyboards. According to The Telegraph, it's the first time the shop has sold the instrument in 70 years.
The "inspired by our Christmas advert" range starts at £150 for a portable electronic keyboard and reaches up to £872 for a Yahama Digital Piano, which comes in white, black or white ash.
