The team at the BBC's Sounds Like Friday Night aired a tribute to the late Swedish DJ Avicii only moments after news of his death was announced.

Avicii's PR team shared the tragic news on Friday night (April 20) that the 'Levels' and 'Lonely Together' musician had been found dead earlier in the day in Oman. His cause of death isn't yet known.

BBC One's Sounds Like Friday Night opened up their own show only a few moments later with a live performance from Shawn Mendes, before co-presenter Greg James announced Avicii's passing to his studio audience.

"Just before we came on the air, we heard the news that 28-year-old Grammy Award-nominated DJ and producer Avicii has sadly passed away," he began.

"His songs have been the soundtrack to many people's lives, and of course, we send our condolences to his friends and family.

"But I think it would be in keeping with his live shows — I've been to a few and they are incredible — if we showed our appreciation right now with a round of applause."

Other tributes have also flooded in throughout Friday night, including solemn remembrances from Dua Lipa, Liam Payne, Charlie Puth and fellow superstar DJ Calvin Harris.

"Devastating news about Avicii, a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do," Harris tweeted. "My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim."

Avicii had kept a notably lower profile ever since he announced that he'd be retiring from touring at just 26 years old, after enduring sustained health problems while on the road.
