It's hard to imagine, but we might've got a version of BBC One hit The Missing without Tcheky Karyo as Julien Baptiste.

He originally turned the part down, because he found the subject matter of the first series too disturbing.

Launching in 2014, The Missing originally followed parents Tony (James Nesbitt) and Emily Hughes (Frances O'Connor) as they hunted for their lost son Olly, with the help of detective Baptiste.

But actor Karyo has now revealed that, as afather himself, the storyline left him shaken.

"I almost didn't do it because of that," he said. "It would've been terrible! But my guts spoke to me [and convinced me to do it]."

Tcheky would eventually accept the offer to play Julien... and the rest is history.

Series two of The Missing continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One - and the show's writers, Harry and Jack Williams, aren't ruling out a third.

"It would have to be very different," Harry said. "But we haven't had the idea yet, to be honest."

The current series, set in both 2014 and the present day, sees Baptiste investigating a new case - the disappearance and return of Alice Webster (Abigail Hardingham) and how it might be linked to the vanishing of another girl, Sophie Giroux.

The Williams brothers previously defended the decision to bring The Missing back for another go-round.

"Anything that affects the story you're telling for the sake of getting another one is a really bad idea," Jack told Digital Spy. "That's really cheap, I think. I get why people do it, because I guess you make more money. But this is a whole new story."
