Doctor Who fans, it looks like we're getting a new episode from Mark Gatiss next year...

In an interview with WhoSFX, Gatiss revealed that he was writing his "ninth episode" while reflecting on his very first - 2005's 'The Unquiet Dead'.

"It seems so natural now as I write my ninth episode – ten if you count the un-produced one – but the 45-minute format took some getting used to," he said.

"Growing up with four and six-parters and cliffhanger endings was how Doctor Who worked, so that was a challenge."

Eight episodes written by Gatiss have aired since 2005, with one offering – WW2 adventure 'The Suicide Exhibition' – going unused in 2008.

His last contribution was 2015's 'Sleep No More', with the writer and actor telling Digital Spy that he was keen to pen a follow-up.

"I've got an idea, which I've talked to Steven [Moffat, Doctor Who showrunner] about," he said.

"The thing about this stage of planning a new season is there's all kinds of things being thrown at the wall, so we'll see. I'd love to do a sequel though, I really would."

So is this new episode a new adventure featuring The Sandmen - or something else entirely? Time will tell - it always does...

Doctor Who will return to BBC One this Christmas, with a full series to follow in 2017. A new spin-off series, Class, will premiere in late 2016.
