According to Chris Evans, of the entire situation that saw Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson fired from his job, the most "bizarre" part was the why he was axed.

The 50-year-old new host of Top Gear appears in the latest edition of GQ saying that the reason behind Jeremy Clarkson's firing was the most fascinating part of what happened, considering the former host had already survived international incidents unscathed.

Clarkson was suspended, and then eventually fired for punching Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon after he was told there was no hot food available after a day of filming.

Asked whether Clarkson deserved to be fired, Evans said: "What is more fascinating is that he went for what he went for, considering what had gone on before.

"If you look at the chronology of controversy of Top Gear over the last five or six years, it is bizarre that he went for losing his rag over his dinner when there had been international incidents before that."

Clarkson was at the centre of many high-profile controversies on the show.

Incidents included claiming a car manufactured in Mexico would be lazy, mumbling the word n*gger in unaired footage, and angering a mob of Argentinians after driving a car with a number plate believed to be a reference to the Falklands war.

But in spite all of this, Evans insists that Clarkson is still his hero.

He said: "We used to get on. I don't know if we still get on because I haven't seen him in ages. But he is one of my heroes. He's entertaining. He was great on Top Gear and I love his writing."

Top Gear returns on BBC One later this month with new hosts Evans and Matt LeBlanc taking up presenting duties.

Let's just hope the new presenter doesn't try to turn his admiration for his predecessor into imitation or he might be out of a job.
