We could be embarking on Peter Capaldi's final year on Doctor Who – at least according to a premonition from the actor himself.

With his second full series behind him, the 12th Doctor is at least confirmed to be back in the TARDIS for Doctor Who's tenth run.

In a recent chat with the Daily Telegraph, Capaldi hinted that his era traveling through time and space could end in the foreseeable future.

"This could be my final year – it's terrifying," he said. "I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over.

"But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That's my terrible melancholic nature.

"When you accept the job you know there'll come a day, inevitably, when you'll be saying goodbye."

Before we get to any regenerations, The Doctor will be reunited with his wife when Alex Kingston returns to the sci-fi series this Christmas for 'The Husbands of River Song'.

"It's a very festive, light‑hearted Christmas afternoon show," Capaldi teased. "Although a lot of adults really like it, at its heart Doctor Who is designed to entertain children as well.

"I like the idea of families watching together. That's what I did when I was a child."

Also starring Matt Lucas and Greg Davies, the cosmic adventure hits screens on Christmas Day in the US and the UK.
