Toby Jones will become one of literature's most iconic characters in BBC One's upcoming series The Secret Agent.

The Secret Agent - which is based on Joseph Conrad's classic novel - also reunites This Is England stars Vicky McClure, Joseph Gilgun and Stephen Graham.

Jones has been cast as Mr Verloc, a spy employed by the Russians to provoke a London bomb attack carried out by anarchists.

Verloc's spying puts him at odds with London's Chief Inspector Heat (Graham) and his own long-suffering wife Winnie (McClure).

"I am both excited and intrigued by the challenge of playing Verloc, the eponymous hero of Conrad's startlingly relevant novel The Secret Agent," Jones said of the coveted role.

His co-star McClure added: "I'm so excited to play the part of Winnie. It's an incredible script. And delighted to work with Toby Jones, I've always been a huge fan of his!"

The Secret Agent is being adapted for the BBC by Tony Marchant (Public Enemies), and will also star Tom Goodman-Hill (Humans), Raphael Acloque (The Ivory Year), Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Becoming Jane) and David Dawson (Luther).
