We'll be getting big names on the UK version of Lip Sync Battle, Channel 5's boss has promised.

The show - which sees celebrities miming to popular songs - has been a huge hit in the US and Channel 5 ordered a UK take on the series earlier this week.

Channel 5's director of programmes Ben Frow has now told Broadcast that he will try to match the star power of the American original, which has seen famous faces such as Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, Mike Tyson, Stephen Merchant, Terry Crews, Queen Latifah and Justin Bieber take to the mic.

"We have to get up there in terms of talent otherwise it's not worth doing it," Frow said. "It is helped by the vibe about it and we touched base with Stephen Merchant and a lot of people are on board emotionally.

"This could be the show that tips opinion in our favour as long as we get the casting right."

Frow admitted that he is betting a lot on Lip Sync Battle, saying: "Entertainment is something that we really struggle with at Channel 5.

"We don't have a great reputation for the genre so it's great when a show like Lip Sync Battle comes along with such a great buzz about it. This is a high-bar show - it will not be Soapstar Superstar."

And he suggested that it's different from anything you'd find on other channels, describing the show as self-deprecating and youthful.

"I don't think you'd see that on ITV or BBC," he said. "They might do a karaoke show but Lip Sync Battle is very simple, done virtually live and has a rawness about it."

Empire stars Taraji P Henson and Terrence Howard will go head to head in the Lip Sync Battle US finale later this month, with a special appearance from Mary J Blige.
