Vera star Brenda Blethyn has teased that “trouble” lies ahead for several characters ahead of the final episode.

The ITV crime-drama will conclude over the festive season with its 14th series, with the show ending after 13 years on the small screen.

With several fans looking forward to its final chapter, Blethyn attended an event at the British Film Institute to commemorate the show, teasing that several characters will be placed in danger.

“I will tell you there's trouble with Detective Inspector Joe Ashworth,” she began (via The Sun). “Joe has something going on that he doesn't want to talk about and Vera is anxious to get to the bottom of that.

“We know he came back to the area because his father was ill. He passed away [which] we've already seen. Joe doesn't seem to have come out of that dungeon and Vera's concerned about that.”

Blethyn, who has received two Academy Award nominations in her career, also teased that her own character would have a “big” decision to make after she is offered a promotion by her superior.

The conclusion of the show was confirmed after Blethyn announced in April that she would be stepping down from the role, with the star saying: “Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying Cheerio.

“But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role… Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Whilst Vera will come to an end over the festive season, Blethyn recently shared that she had no plans to retire from acting altogether, with the star already signing up to a brand new feature-film project.

Vera airs on ITV1.
