Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teases a new direction for season two of the Netflix hit. During an exclusive interview with Digital Spy the showrunner hinted at what's in store for the show's sophomore season.

"If the storyline of season one was about Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) entering these games and trying to survive, season two we find Gi-hun after his awakening.

"He now goes back into the game with a much clearer motive of wanting to stop these games. So that will be the biggest difference between the two seasons."

Dong-hyuk elaborated further saying: "The main access of the storyline is going to be the clash between Gi-hun with these motives and In-ho (Lee Byung-hun) who wants to stop Gi-hun from stopping the game so I think focusing on that main storyline is going to help you get a great viewing experience."

Dong-hyuk's comments on season two follow the latest teaser trailer drop which shows Seong Gi-hun return to the games as Player 456. In the teaser footage, Gi-hun attempts to shepherd the new, unsuspecting, players through the first game - red light/green light, but panic ensues after the first player is shot.

The trailer also reveals that Jun-ho has survived. He is joined in the second season by his deadly brother.

It was announced in August 2024 that Squid Game had been renewed for its third and final season ahead of its season two debut.

Of the next couple of chapters Dong-hyuk said: "Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn't seem to be an easy opponent this time either.

"The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with season three, which will be brought to you next year."

Squid Game season 2 drops on Netflix on December 26. Season 1 and reality show spin-off Squid Game: The Challenge are available to stream on the service now.
