Martin Freeman and Siobhan Finneran's gripping ITV crime drama A Confession is now on Netflix.

The six-part series dramatised the real-life investigation into the 2011 death of Sian O'Callaghan following her disappearance on a night out in Swindon in 2011.

Former Sherlock star Freeman leads A Confession as Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher. The series revolves around how he breached police guidelines to catch the man convicted of O'Callaghan's death.

Fulcher ultimately resigned from his position after it came to light that he'd interrogated suspect Christopher Halliwell without a lawyer present and failed to caution him.

The series wrestles with the ethical ramifications of bending the rules since Christopher Halliwell was ultimately put behind bars for life for O'Callaghan's death and the earlier killing of another woman, Becky Godden.

While Fulcher was found guilty by a police disciplinary tribunal of gross misconduct for breaching Code C of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), the mother of Becky Godden publicly supported him for bringing her daughter's killer to justice.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the time of the show's release in 2019, Freeman suggested Fulcher was right to put catching a killer before the official police rules.

"He did what he did, which most people wouldn't even recognise as an infringement of the law," Freeman told us. "He didn't kick or punch anybody. He didn't frame anybody up. He didn't put words into anybody's mouth.

"My sympathy and my empathy is certainly with Steve Fulcher, let's put it that way, and not just because I've played him. I don't know how anyone could say he did the wrong thing, morally.

"I'm also somebody who believes passionately that police have to be accountable. Of course they do. But still, morally, I'd much rather coppers like him were out there."

The TV dramatisation was written by Jeff Pope (See No Evil: The Moors Murders), and also features former EastEnders star Joe Absolom as Christopher Halliwell. Imelda Staunton and Peter Wight feature in the show too.

A Confession is now available to stream on Netflix.
