Slow Horses star Saskia Reeves has spoken about her attitude towards major character deaths on the show, after the likes of Min (Dustin Demri-Burns) and Spider (Freddie Fox) met fateful ends.

The Apple TV+ hit returns for season four today (September 3), based on Mick Herron’s novel Spook Street in his series of espionage capers. The six-parter revolves around a suicide bomber in a London shopping centre, while David Cartwright’s (Jonathan Pryce) dementia has worsened in the months since season three.

Reeves, who plays Jackson Lamb’s long-suffering assistant Catherine Standish in the spy purgatory of Slough House, told Digital Spy during an exclusive chat that much of the cast has read ahead through Herron’s nine-part book series to find out what’s to come for their characters.

While the books are followed "pretty closely" on the show, Reeves also said she knows the production have "license to do whatever they want".

"I'll never allow myself to be too comfortable or smug, because they might change their mind," Reeves said.

What to Read Next

"I dive into [the books] all the time, and I find Mick's dialogue is really fantastic, and the scripts are very, very good too. Every now and then there'll be a line of Mick's that hasn't been included, and I'll ask Will Smith, the showrunner, "Is there any room?'"

"I love the fact that we have these rich backstories, these rich details in the novels. It's great to have all that in my brain. It's great to have things that I've said in the book that I don't say in the film script, because it's interesting, the things we don't say as much as the things we do."

There’s even more Slow Horses beyond season four for fans to look forward to, with season five already filmed and on the way.
