The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln is set to make a long-awaited return to British screens, having landed a role in new ITV drama Cold Water.

The actor, known for playing Rick Grimes in the hit AMC series, leads the cast of the thriller, with additional cast members including Doctor Who's Indira Varma, Trainspotting actor Ewen Bremner and Eve Myles of Hijack and Torchwood fame.

Lincoln plays stay-at-home dad John in the six-part series, who relocates his wife Fiona (Varma) and their children from London to the fictional Scottish village of Coldwater.

Shortly after the move, John befriends neighbour Tommy (Bremner), described as a "charming, confident man" and "devoted husband" to the local vicar Rebecca (Myles). While John is taken with his new friend, Fiona has her suspicions.

"John remains blissfully unaware that Tommy is harbouring horrifying secrets, and it’s only after a series of unsettling incidents start to occur that John begins to wonder who the real Tommy actually is," reads the synopsis.

"And when John’s long-repressed rage comes to a head with disastrous results, he soon finds himself unexpectedly indebted to his new friend."

The synopsis concludes: "This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous."

This year, Lincoln returned as Rick in the spin-off series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
